How to get rid of ants with borax
Ants can be super annoying, especially when they find their way into your home and garden. Once ants have found a food source, they'll stop at nothing to keep taking from it, unless of course, they're deterred or killed. Thankfully this is one of the best simple life hacks for ants. The natural remedy comes to us from Practically Functional, a great blog online featuring DIY, simple life hacks, and even some yummy recipes. So what do ants eat anyway? Some people think that ants will eat just about anything, but actually, adult ants only eat liquids and they can’t digest solids. The larvae are the ones process solid foods into liquids, and then the queen feeds it. So like Jessi from Practically Functional mentions, in order to kill the entire colony of ants, you must put out solid food bait and liquid food bait.
The reason ants are so difficult to get rid of is because they are very resilient and it's their job to bring food back to the colony. They create a distinct pathway to their food source with pheromones which communicate with other ants where to go. You know how you usually see ants following a line that leads to their food source? Well, that's the path that's form with these invisible trail markers. So you can clean up the source, but if you don't clean up the trail, the ants will still find their way to the food source. You can also use natural remedies to kill them at the source. For this natural remedy to get rid of ants, you'll be using Borax. Borax is an all natural mineral that's mined from the earth. You can find the borax in boxes at the store, usually under the brand 20 Mule Team Borax. This borax is usually used for laundry as a way to combat hard water. You'll mix some borax with some honey or maple syrup and water to make an all natural remedy for getting rid of ants. The mixture will act as a poison to the ants, but the sugar in the honey and maple syrup will attract them, and they'll eat it up not even noticing the poisonous borax in the solution. Even though borax is all natural and it's safe to use, you should still be careful when using it. Make sure to keep it away from yourkids and pets and try not to breathe it in or touch it too much.
To make your own safe, natural remedy for ridding your home of ants just take 3/4 cup of honey or maple syrup and put it in the microwave until it melts down a little bit. Then, mix in 1/4 cup of borax and stir until combined. You can also use three parts sugar with one part borax and add enough water to make a syrup. Then, you'll go around and pour it in the middle of their path so that they find it and pretty soon they'll all be feasting on the sugary poison. If you're using this in the garden, just be sure to put it on a little dish instead of on the soil, as it could create a reaction that will harm your plants. For the solid ant poison, just mix a 1/4 cup of borax with powdered 3/4 cup of sugar and mix well. Alternate the liquids and the solids so they can take them both. If you want an added measure, you can also use boiling water to get rid of ants at the source. Just bring water to a boil and add two tablespoons of cayenne pepper, then pour it into the holes. Try out these great natural remedies and simple life hacks to take care of that ant problem the natural way.***
